ILLEGAL TENDER news Produced by John Singleton, Illegal Tender to sneak at the 8th National Assn. of Latino Independent Producers confab in Newport Beach Source: Variety March 7, 2007 John Singleton is hosting a sneak peak screening of his first Latino pic as producer, Franc Reyes' "Illegal Tender," at the 8th National Assn. of Latino Independent Producers confab in Newport Beach, which opens on Thursday. Presented by HBO and the National Latino Media Council, the four-day meet will look at the potential of the mobile revolution for Latino filmmakers, among other topics. HBO will host an opening-night reception for conference attendees as well as a panel on opportunities in the cell-phone arena. "One of the great things about Nalip has always been its ability to gather the best in the business for the exchange of ideas, knowledge and experiences," said HBO veep of market development Lucinda Martinez-Desir. Panelists include Ralph Rivera, Quincy D. Jones III, Nely Galan, Jerry Velasco, Christy Haubegger, Moctesuma Esparza, Alexis Garcia, Conrad Hool and Santiago Pozo. Comedian and radio host Joey Medina will host a dinner on Saturday honoring George A. Romero, Edward James Olmos, the producers of ABC's "Ugly Betty" and the winners of the confab's Estela awards, "Tortilla Heaven" helmer Judy Hecht Dumontet and "Al Otro Lado" helmer Natalia Almada. Executives from AOL Latino, Intel, HBO, the Screen Actors Guild, Universal, CBS, Fox, Endeavor, Warner Bros., Voy, State Street Pictures and the Writers Guild of America West are scheduled to attend. Weekend agenda includes performer/director panels on voiceover careers and cold readings, opportunities to pitch Si TV and Nickelodeon, plus tips on how to break in to Hollywood. Documakers will be offered seminars that include one on doc distribution in the new-media age; a funding panel with reps from all the major documentary foundations and funds; and a pitch forum with international commissioning editors from Spain and France. Nalip sessions will also include an "Ugly Betty" case study with the show's producers, marketers and cast members.
