What was possibly the worst kept secret in town, Variety finally reports today that Will Smith has officially committed to "I Am Legend" for Warner Bros. Pictures. Francis Lawrence ("Constantine") will be directing the feature. Akiva Goldsman ("The Da Vinci Code") rewrote a screenplay by Mark Protosevic.

According to Latino Review, Smith has a pay-or-play deal to make "Legend" his next project, after he completes "Tonight, He Comes" at Sony. "Legend" came closest to getting made back in 1997 with Ridley Scott directing Arnold Schwarzenegger. Warners applied the brakes because the budget hovered around $108 million, a figure considered high at the time. The fact Schwarzenegger was coming off the disappointing "Batman & Robin" and "Jingle All the Way" didn't help matters.

Loosely based on "The Omega Man," the movie is set in a post-apocalyptic New York where the human race has been wiped out by a deadly virus. Trapped during the day in his home, the last remaining healthy human (Smith) must battle mutants at night if he wants to survive.
