Keke Palmer, the 12-year-old actress who stars in the upcoming "Akeelah and the Bee," will be hailed as Rising Star of the Year at the upcoming ShoWest convention, which runs March 13-16 in Las Vegas. Palmer's honor will be presented to her March 14 at the Paris Las Vegas before a screening of "Akeelah," which Lionsgate will release in partnership with Starbucks Entertainment and 2929 Prods. on April 28. "With past performances that have consistently earned the attention and respect of critics and audiences, Keke is now stepping into a starring role with a stunning performance in 'Akeelah and the Bee,' which is sure to continue her well-deserved rise to stardom," Mitch Neuhauser, co-managing director of the event, said in announcing the award.

Former American Idol contestant and Dreamgirls co-star Jennifer Hudson has been named the ShoWest Female Star of Tomorrow.

Jennifer Hudson's ship has definitely come in. Daily Variety reports Hudson has been named ShoWest's Female Star of Tomorrow. She'll get the award at the western conference of the National Association of Theatre Owners when the convention closes in mid-March in Las Vegas.

It's an honor of dubious history…legendary performers like Pia Zadora have won it in the past. Nevertheless, things are looking good for Jennifer Hudson. The former cruise ship singer got mainland attention competing on American Idol and has now got a part in the big bucks movie translation of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls.

Hudson is also working on her first album, so don't expect to see her at lifeboat drill again anytime soon.
