August 17, 2005 Source: The Hollywood Reporter According to The Hollywood Reporter, Thandie Newton has been cast opposite Will Smith in The Pursuit of Happyness for Columbia Pictures. Written by Steve Conrad (The Weather Man), the drama centers on Chris Gardner (Smith), a sporadically employed salesman who wins custody of his young son just as he is about to begin a stock brokerage intern program. America fell in love with the real life character, who was left jobless and homeless at age 30 due to a series of circumstances, and later found himself and his baby son living in a bathroom at a San Francisco train station. Newton will play Linda, Smith's estranged wife and the mother of his son. The project will start shooting in San Francisco this August.
