February 2003
Week of February 14th thru February 21st

Congratulations to the Nominees

While last year was an historic moment for African-Americans when Will Smith, Halle Berry, and Denzel Washington were each nominated for an Oscar with the latter two winning the Best Actress and Best Actror Award respectively, this year Queen Latifah shares the spotlight as the ONLY African-American nominated. It was for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the musical film Chicago.

Minorities have come a long way as this year may be the year for Latinos as Selma Hayek became the first Latino to be nominated for Best Actress for her role in Frida. Not only that, there was a screenplay nomination for Alfonso Cuarón ("Y Tu Mamá También"), a screenplay and a directing nomination for Pedro Almodóvar ("Talk to Her") and a best foreign-language film nomination for Carlos Carrera's "Crimen del Padre Amaro" from Mexico. Almodóvar is the first Spaniard nominated for a best-director Oscar. For a complete list on Oscar nominations, go to www.oscar.com

In the meantime, opening up this week is the long-delayed Lockdown, and Daredevil featuring Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin.

Till next time,

Daredevil (in Film)
In Mark Steven Johnson’s film DAREDEVIL, Ben Affleck may have the look to play the character but lacks the charm and the strength to carry the film.

How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days (in Film)
In Donald Petrie’s How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, the setup to the inevitable is contrived to highest level that although you may want to dismiss the film, the performances by the leads are appealing enough for you to have good time enjoying this film.

Deliver Us From Eva (in Film)
The latest installment in the Black romantic comedy genre employs the same formulaic and over-the-top storytelling tactics that unfortunately are becoming more and more commonplace from Hollywood… not at all what you’d expect from an independent shingle.

The Recruit (in Film)
If there was ever a time you thought about being James Bond and wondered about the training process, this is the film for you. Starring Al Pacino and Colin Farrell as the teacher and the student, the film gives you a jolt of suspense as the plot is not what is seems.

City of God (Cidade de Deus) (in Film)
City of God is a heady experience of violence, notoriety and damn good storytelling. Regardless of the chaotic filmmaking, the viewer is held in place by the knowledge that this story is real.

Biker Boyz (in Film)
Biker Boyz is based on an article that appeared in the Los Angeles New Times in 1999. It detailed the rarely heard of world of black motorcycle clubs that fraternize and compete in races up and down southern California. Despite its soft ending, Biker Boyz is highly entertaining and also intriguing because of its insider view on another aspect of black life..

Good Fences (in TV Movies)
Coming out this week are films that some have been waiting to see on their own time rather than on television. Some of these films helped actors better in their craft and some helped rap music cement their place in the industry.
