Denzel - Look out Oscar : Here He Comes Again

In December 2002, Hollywood studios will unleash its slate of holiday blockbusters as well as the films that the creatives believe will make Oscar voters take notice. So far, very few films have been getting any Oscar buzz until now. Similar to the early buzz on "Training Day," Denzel is back in the saddle with ANTWONE FISHER. Only this time, Denzel takes his craft to the next level in serving as the films director and star. Opposite newcomer Derek Luke, who plays the volatile sailor Antwone Fisher, Denzel once again delivers an Oscar worthy performance. Last year, I pleaded in this column for Denzel to win the award and he did. Unfortunately, two years ago I was shocked when he lost for his untouchable performance in "The Hurricane."

Antwone Fisher is the story of a man who has to dig inside his inner soul to find out who he really is. A sailor with an explosive attitude, Fisher (Derek Luke) is ordered to see a naval psychiatrist (Denzel Washington) about his volatile temper. Little did he know that his first step into the doctor's office would lead him on a journey home. With the support of the doctor, who becomes more like a father than anyone Fisher has ever known, and the woman (Joy Bryant) from whom he learns how to love, Fisher finds the courage to stop fighting and start healing. Only then can he call on the family he never knew and come to terms with the one he knew all too well.

Antwone Fisher opens in wide release on December 20th.
